Hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a new DVD player. Anyone havve an opinion on what would be a better way to go between HD and Blu-Ray? I want a player I can just plug in to the TV and use, without the need of an external HD box to interface the two.

Go Blu Ray, because HDDVD is about to be no more as I understand. Sucks for me because I just bought A nice Toshiba HD DVD player a few months ago :x

But wait, is Blue Ray backwards compatible? To me it's useless if I can't play my "old" DVDs on it anymore.

As far as I've seen, all Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are backwards compatible. You'd be hard-pressed to find something that isn't backwards-compatible nowadays - it's all the rage on computers, video game consoles, and even movie players.

I've also started to see a lot of players and PC drives that play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Those devices will be the saviors for all those who invested in HD-DVD movies.

And yeah, HD-DVD is headed out the door. Production for HD-DVD hardware and movies will cease this month. See the article below:

Toshiba - the main proponent of HD-DVD - has surrendered. :|

I'm glad I waited for the war to end first.

Go Blue Ray. HDDVD is officially dead. Both WB and Netflix have dropped the format.

Nope. The add-on drive they built for it is HD-DVD, designed when HD-DVD was a prime contender against Blu-Ray.

They might make a Blu-Ray drive in the future, though... or they might save it for the next-gen XBox console.
