I attended the Newport Jazz Festival yesterday and had the chance to see Esperanza Spalding and Marcus Miller back to back!
Esperanza is phenomenal on electric and double bass and as a singer. It is mind boggling how she is able to sing and play as she does simultaneously. Her singing style is so unique, just a phenomenal talent.
Marcus has tone to die for of course, he is so groovy, everything he does is musical not just technical. He was introduced as 'the baddest bass player on the planet' and I guess he has a claim to that - although Stanley Clarke wasn't there this year
Newport Jazz Festival is a great event, it is outdoors at a state park right on the ocean with a historic fort as the backdrop. It is really cool if you ever get a chance to go I would definitely recommend it.
