Went down to Waikiki to watch a friend's band last week, and saw the bass player playing a strange, exotic looking bass. He said it was a Burns Bass, English made I believe he mentioned it was built in the '80's... one of the wings says "Flyte"... anyone recognize this? did they ever make a left hand model?

Looks like an old Burns ("The British Leo Fender") design.

Talk about a jarring juxtaposition: a space-age bass sitting on some primitive flip-flops.

Of course you know this is Oahu, Hawaii... where East-meets-West, and Hi-Tech meets Laid-Back! I don't even own a suit! :D

After Googling, I found out that Burns was a guitar company in England, and this particular model was produced in the late 70's, and originally called the Concorde, after Britain's Supersonic jet. Interesting story, and Man. The company is still in business... http://www.burnsguitars.com/

and there is a website named the Burns Guitar Museum... http://www.burnsguitarmuseum.com/, with a picture of a Flyte guitar here.... http://www.burnsguitarmuseum.com/the-guitars/#11

I doubt any left hand models were ever made... can't help but think this body design resembles a Kubicki....

OK, now I'm getting into over-kill territory, but this is a interesting bass/guitar design, with an interesting history. Here's another link showing pics, and a bit of a story... http://guitarz.blogspot.com/2009/05/bur ... -bass.html

Here's another one of a prototype bass.... http://guitarz.blogspot.com/2010/11/fly ... ordes.html. Cool story behind this one, as it was stolen from Jim Burns' workshop, and sold to a musician who spoke with Burns at a trade show, and was told it was stolen. For some reason the musician decided to leave the show without giving the bass back to Burns, or at least pay him some money for it. The blogger of this story is correct in stating that this bass should be in the Burns Museum....

Not overkill for me - I love this stuff!

Found these great photos on a Japanese website, asking price 189,000 yen - $2024.00! Check out the classy hardware on this bass, and especially the bridge! OK, I'm done now! ;)
