I don't know if there is a rule here governing such a question, so I'll ask only in general terms. I have a bass I've been thinking of selling, is it okay to ask folks' opinions of its value on this board? I'm not trying to get into a bidding thing, I just need some idea of a baseline for an asking price. E-bay isn't much help for figuring this out 'cuz I haven't seen too many leftys over there & the few Ive seen weren't apples to apples. Thanks, Vin.

I have no problem with it either, but Peter's (PJ) opinion on such things is as good as mine if I'm not around, don't be shy to ask either of us.

If you want to let us lowball you on a bass you're trying to sell, go for it.

Okay, it's a '79 4001 lefty that I bought new way back then. White (nicely yellowed) with black binding, OHSC. All original, however I took the pickup cover off many years ago & lost it. I since bought a replacement from Pick of the Ricks but haven't put it on. I also bought a selector switch at the time but haven't installed it either. The original would sometimes return to the center position on its own. The neck is good as is the truss rod. It's got a coupla' nicks here & there, however not much playing wear. I bought a P in 1980 & haven't played the Rick ten hours since then. I really don't play it but it's the first "real" bass I ever bought so I've been reluctant to sell it. I'm looking for your thoughts on the value to decide if it's worth more to me to keep it or let it go after all this time.

Nevermind the string job that's from way back when, LOL. Also the original knobs are in the case, those you see are some custom titanium ones I made.

I'm not one to ask about old Rick basses, I'm clueless to their worth. I think PJ, Austin Leftybass, or Arni would be more in the know on the value of the old basses. Anything with Rickenbacker has taken a nice price hike in recent years though, so I'm sure it's worth a decent amount. Do you have a $$ number in mind that's the tipping point between you selling or keeping it?

I didn't really have a number in mind. I'm just wondering what they're going for. That would help me decide.

you might ping Chicago Music Exchange and see what they're asking for this lefty. while not exactly the same as yours, it could serve as a ballpark base for pricing

It's kind of hard to pinpoint the present value of an old Rick because after they re-released lefty 4003s and decided to charge upwards of 50% more for them than what they used to cost Rickenbacker has single-handedly controlled the supply and demand market value. Annoying, yes, but people seem to be buying them anyway.

Your best bet is to go to Gbase (http://www.gbase.com) and do a Rick bass search, whether righty or lefty, or do an ebay or google search for "lefty Rickenbacker bass" etc. and see what common market value is. Then if you want to sell it, price it much less so one of us can afford it. ;)
