Ok,

I’m reaching out to the Lefty Bassist crew in the hope of getting some help.

I’m trying to find a bass teacher (an actual bassist, not a guitar teacher who also teaches bass) in NY. Specifically, I’m looking for someone in Manhattan or out in Suffolk County on Long Island. And yes, they have to be in-person. Skype/video lessons aren’t a viable option for me.

My only hard and fast criteria is that they NOT BE A FLAKE.

Also, I need someone who is willing to teach a person who plays lefty with the strings inverted (B/E on the bottom). The inverted string thing seems to be a deal breaker for a lot of teachers.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

It's been a while, but I took some lessons from Patrick Pfeiffer way back when. I'm pretty sure he's still teaching. I know he does clinics and Skype lessons too. Great, patient instructor and a nice guy:

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve sent him an email. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I just heard back from him. He seems like a really nice guy who definitely knows what he’s doing, but he’s a “little” out of my current price range.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I second Patrick as an amazing teacher, both in person as well as over skype. In person he is quite expensive, but skype I believe is more accessible.
Failing that, I took a number of lessons with Andres Rotmistrovsky, another fantastic teacher. He moved back to Argentina, but teaches over skype I believe. http://andresrotmistrovsky.com/

“a “little” out of my price range” was my diplomatic attempt at saying “quite expensive”. ;)

Unfortunately, by the time that I get home at night, my wife is already asleep, so Skype lessons don’t work for me.

You know that with a $100, 2 channel computer interface, a cheap dynamic mic ($50+stand) and some headphones you could do your skype lessons right? In fact I can't even imagine how you could do Skype lessons using a computer mic. We are talking about bass lessons not flute, right?

You can ask me if you have questions on gear and set ups.

Given, if you live in a studio and you are learning to slap near your sleeping wife that would still wake her up but otherwise Skype is the way to go.

My wife is a VERY light sleeper. There’s no way to have the conversations necessary during lessons without waking her up.

Of course, given the current state of things, Skype lessons are now the ONLY option. And since I’m working from home for the next six(ish) weeks, I may be able to work it out, at least for a little while.
