Thanks for the thoughts all. I'm in the DC Metro area, specifically in Northern Virginia, and we were very lucky. It's a mess outside, but we did not lose power or take any flood damage to the house, though a LOT of my colleagues from work, and other friends did not fair so well, most of those lived right in DC or in Maryland. I imagine we'll be having some guests staying with us for a while.
A buddy of mine in the Bronx said he was ok, but that Manhattan was just an utter mess.

Re: Sandy
we got the backside of the storm here in Western PA. much rain and minor flooding, but nothing like they got in NYC/NJ/MD/CT.
The other story is the HUGE snowfall they are getting in the mountains of VA/WVA. 2 feet by the end of the day when the storm is finally done.
all of our prayers go out to those who will not have power, phones, internet-tv, for weeks to come, not including the billions of flooded properties that will have to be condemned as unlivable.

My thoughts are with all of our Lefty Brothers who have been affected by either being in the path of Sandy, or have friends/loved-ones who were..... in the meantime, donations are already pouring in, and we can help as well. Here is a link to the Red Cross...

I'm here and alive. Thanks for your best wishes, everyone, as this is been my first chance to get online since the storm.
Long story short: our beautiful 60ft. evergreen is no more, as it crashed down on our power/cable lines and landed right on our front step. Miraculously, we still have power even though the line was pinned to the ground, as the force bent the power line's pipe and ripped it away from the side of my house. We also never really got flooding where I live, only insane winds. But 1 town over, not to mention Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island, are under water. My neighbor and I spent all day Thursday chainsawing and moving limbs to the curb, as it's impossible to get a tree company right now. So now power line's happily dangling 2 feet off the ground over my driveway. All utilities, however, are out: internet, cable, and landline, and even cell phone operation's been sporadic. Catch 22: Fios won't restore services until the power line dangling is repaired; PSE&G won't repair power line until piping that contains said power line is put back up or replaced by an electrician; try finding an electrician, landscaper, tree company, gas, open bank, etc. right now; you get the point.
If you told me we'd ever get a storm worse than Irene or the ice storm of last October, I never would have believed you. This is MUCH worse. IMO.

Peter ... as the old saying goes ... "It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature".
Having lived above the Artic Circle in winter and in the Canadian Rockies for a year or so, it taught me a lot of respect for the forces of nature.
Glad to know yoy're house wasn't trashed, all your gear is safe and sound and mostly that your family escaped unscathed.
Now ... if you could just find a damn electrician!!!

Re: Sandy
I spent two months on Kauai, Hawaii while working for Honda Corp., after Hurricane Iniki devastated the Island back in 1992... Mother Nature is nothing to be trifled with, nor to be taken lightly when she generates storms like Sandy... you are indeed lucky to have minimal damage, all things considered... it took literally two months to restore power to the entire Island after Iniki... I heard on the news tonight it might take as long as next Wednesday to get power back to the areas that don't have it, and if I heard right, that's around 900,000 people currently without power!
New York is an amazing City, and State - it demonstrated how resilient it was after 9-11, - and will overcome this latest devastation.... good luck to you, your friends and family, and the Great State of New York!

Re: Sandy
I live in the West Village in Manhattan which was without power for days and days. However, in one of those crazy coincidences, I left for a UK holiday the Saturday before Sandy and returned last night so I missed the entire thing. Fortunately all my friends and family are fine and nothing bad happened to anyone's homes in my local circle other than a long blackout.
