I'm looking at both, and the main thing is that the Star is semi-hollow. I would really like to try both, but that's unlikely.

Is it me or there this something odd with the laminated maple at the bottom of the bass. Like it has been sanded or repaired.

Yup, I see what you mean. But it's not visible in all the pictures. Hmmmm...

There are enough demos that make these seem like great sounding basses. But I would be afraid to order one without trying first, due to suspected QC issues. Among the 5 or 6 available left-handed models I have come across in the last year-or-so, all had the bridge and tailpiece installed at various angles. Aside from possibly affecting string alignment, this might make it tough to set decent intonation. I think only about two out of those 5 or 6 had the G-string side set closer to the neck.

They sure do look great.
