I don't really see the phallic shape intended.
It looks more like a long reach clock key or a long neck Hookah vase to me.

OTOH, Thumb basses look like Scandinavian sex aids.

Once you see that, you can't stop seeing it. To me, it's the most obvious case of phallic symbolism in any instrument.
