Does that really double the value, though?

Good question. Just the finish, probably not. However, they are pretty rare especially a lefty in this condition. You probably would be hard pressed to find another this condition any time soon if ever. If it's all original and the numbers match it's probably a fair price. Values are always to some degree subjective of coarse. So if you've been looking for one to add to your collection. this could be a rare opportunity. It would probably be listed higher by some vintage dealers. Carmine seems to have one of everything. He would probably know best how rare this is.

Is it normal for the truss rod nut to be sticking out the head stock like that on a jazz in 78? It just doesn't look right.

Yes that’s the truss adjustment nut. They started doing that in 1975 on Jazz basses.

Just curious; my '78 P-Bass has a 4-bolt pattern... did '78 Jazz Basses come with three bolt?

They only changed the bolt pattern on Jazz basses and not precisions. I don’t know why though.

I think I’m in the minority here. From silverish to snotty, I love Antigua finishes

I love them too! And I think the rarity of good ones justifies a higher price for sure. I try to ignore threads like this one so I avoid temptation! :-)

Hard enough to find a lefty Fender from that era with blocks and binding, let alone one in Asparagus-burst!

Somehow tho, my brain is telling me the knobs are not period correct. ... I'll let you Fender experts school me on that subject ...

Yep those knobs are the correct ones. They went through a weird “let’s put strat knobs on a jazz” phase for a while. The skirted knobs are so much cooler!
