But these are great sounding and playing basses with some history behind them, and they don't come up for sale very often.

IMHO it's not an insane price, but $3,000 is an awful lot of money.

I'd say that's an accurate assessment- a few of these mid 70's lefties have come up from time to time. A 60's lefty would be even more rare... but either way no one knows how few there are...lefty EBs were basically special orders, never part of a regular production run, so you never know if/when another opportunity will come along.

I agree great sounding and playing basses- and with modern amplification much more versatile now than they were back then!

I always wondered what was going though Gibson's mind at the time for the selector switch. It just seems WWWwwwwwaaaaaayyyyyy Bigger than it needs to be.

IMO, the EB3 sounds way better than the originals after they moved the neck PUP away from the neck, but for some reason everyone wants the muddier originals more. This is a much more versatile bass. Also, it seems that the majority of lefties made available in the 70's were the walnut finish and not cherry.

I agree about the neck pickup placement, but other 70's version changes like the chunkier body and fatter maple neck w/ volute (while a lot less delicate) just didn't have the same lovely feel of the thinner all-mahogany 60's Gibsons. Don't get me wrong, the 70's stuff is nice too... but the ergonomic and aesthetic vibe of the original 60's stuff is better imo- which is probably one reason everyone wants the originals more.

By comparison, my all-mahogany lefty slotted headstock 1969-70 EB-3L weighs in at 7.8 lbs:

I agree, look at that beautiful wood grain showing through! The binding's a nice touch too.

I have to ask, having never played a long scale model, if there is much of a noticeable tonal difference between the shorter and longer models?

I've used Fly Guitars as a source of great info about Gibson's basses over the years. He's posted shipping data for each model, though the lefty accounts are obviously not accurate, since he shows no lefties known to have been made/shipped prior to 1975 (though he does mention that Gibson didn't log any distinction between dexterity, finish, etc until after 1970, so who knows).
