Is this legit?
Neck plate and tuners are not!
Looks a little weird but what do I know? :)

If my kid goes to bed soon I’ll whip out my 71 p for you to compare. I’m a bit suspicious- can you read the serial number? 71 was a great year for p basses so if e does have the rest why would he take it apart?

Looks like the nut isn’t original as well as being
set up as a righty, tuners have missing screws...
A weird ad indeed.

Geez, looks like this guy is using an old phone with a 1.3mp camera! Just for the heck of it, I sent him this email through eBay.... "If you have the rest of the bass, why are you parting it out, and not selling it whole? Would like to see a clearer picture of the serial #..." Also, looked at his other sales, and the rest of the bass is not up for sale.... will let you know what his reply is, if he sends one....

The serial # would be on the original neck plate. The number on the heel would be the date. It does look like it the last number is 71. I think it is probably a 71 neck, how ever I do have some concerns. The head stock looks like it has been refinished and a new decal applied. An original 71 finish would have a darker aged color and probably some finish checking. The tuners are not originals and are from two different time periods and appear to be newer replacements not original old stock. It may just be the age of the photo but it looks like it may possibly have a twist to the treble side. All of these issues could speak to the reason it was parted out. If there are this many problems on the neck the body and electronics probably had some issues as well. Depending on the condition and the price of the other parts, negotiating a better package price, could make it an interesting vintage parts project.

Here is the reply back from the seller, and the reason why their are no other parts from this bass up for sale.... "Hi and thanks for your question. The original Fender PBass body was totally wasted. It looked like a kid s arts and crafts project. Holes, girl friend name burned into the wood. My highschool buddy/band mate let a 1982 Charvel go through heavy modifications it s still in a pile! Years go by and there s the Fender PBass neck! No PBass body anywhere. So I had a 71 all Ash PBass body made. I have an old set of PBass pups that just sounds so slamming (late 60 s). I have tracked with these older pickups and it comes through the recording! especially live through my 1973 Ampeg SVT. So I am not in a rush to sell it. I am starting to feel like making a better decision. Thanks man... Ray"

So there you have it...

Finger board looks odd though, like Rickenbacker's lacquered bubinga? I like it, but if it is that, did Fender every make them?

If so, when the neck was refinished the fret board was done. It looks like it may been re-fretted probably. All of this was probably done at the same time. Fender didn't finish rosewood boards.
