Why not get the best of both worlds and install a Proto Guitars Hybrid?

How would that compare totally to splitting the coils of an MM?

The coils are voiced way differently, so you do get a true J bridge PUP tone and the MM tones as well. The Proto I installed sounds nothing like my EB Sterling bass when coils are split.

Here's a demo of the PUP in action.

I'm amused by the thought of buying it and adding an MM, Ric and P pickup to it. And removing half of the frets. Then scrawling ALL BASSES COVERED on the headstock.

For those of you that do not know Howard Ulyate and his pickups "Ulyate Pickups" video link above, they are freaking killer. Howard does his own winds and custom pickups and one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. I had him rewind my 75 Jazz Pickups and they sound HUGE. His pickups are top notch and I would put them up against ANY pickup vender out there today. Just my 2 cents. He can make you what you want. I have a set of dual coils in an EMG DC40 shell built for my Fretless thumbslam is finishing for me. The Ulyate logo is in the proper location Lefty too. He could reverse the MM pickup orientation as well.

Looks like someone decided to give it a shot!
Good luck with it!
If the buyer put some money and good work into it, it will turn out great!

I took lessons from the original owner of this bass when I was a teenager, it's a fantastic bass even if some of the mods are a little strange.
Whoever got this bass scored a major deal.
