This bass has witnessed (and survived):

a) the great flood of '78
b) the great fire of '81
c) the zombie apocolypse of the millenium
d) all of the above
e) who cares? MOJO!

"Oddly, the frets are in great shape. Almost like new."

Well of course they are. Because the strings have never reached the fret board!

All "mojo" aside, buying an instrument that is unplayable is pretty much an expensive piece of wall art.

My old man is a television repairman. He's got this ultimate set of tools.

I can fix it!

"You can't fix this bass Spicoli !"

It's intriguing though. It's such a 50/50 toss-up as to whether this would be a total basket case or not. Maybe for $1K but close to $1.5K is pushing it if that neck doesn't respond to treatment.

Any further thoughts out there?

I personally don't think that price takes into account the risk of the bass needing serious work. At that price, breaking even after repairs is the best-case scenario. When buying a fixer upper, breaking even should be the worst-case scenario (unless you have a personal attachment to a rare model).

That said, I agree with bbl that this ax has some serious mojo. I think it's definitely worth sorting out. Just not at that price.

IMHO, etc.

It would be a serious risk if paid more than $500.
