It's cool and all, but knowing you'll be paying for a luthier to install a new nut (unless that's something you can do on your own), is it worth $800? And is it a true player, or just a relic, because of all of the neat switches?

I own a '67 Hagstrom HBII. It's a fun little bass with a surprisingly good tone (on certain settings), since Hagstrom always had decent PUPS. It is a relic, being the oldest bass I own, and it was affordable given it's age, so there's that vintage yet affordable appeal that these Hagstroms have. It did take a bit of TLC to get in shape, however. The switches were/are a bit flimsy and they did start crackling and not responding, but I resoldered where necessary and shot the pots/switches with DeOxit and now everything's fine. I'd say anyone wanting a true vintage instrument that won't break the bank should consider getting this. Here's mine:
