Wow, talk about a rare bird. I've only seen one other one factory fretless RIC in my 15 years or so of bass hoarding. . . And the flame maple? Out of control.

The maple is very nice, but the fretboard is what really sets this bass off! Don't see a build date in his description.... anyone know what year this is?

Wow - for once with a used Rick, the price doesn't bother me. If I had that disposable income I would definitely consider it and would probably buy it. The flame maple body, beautiful neck and toaster top pickup are what really set it off.

From my understanding, when Rickenbacker made fretless models, they were available lefty on special orders - so was the hollow 4005 I think. But not too many lefties ordered either of them I guess.

Question: Do 4003 Rics have the thick C profile necks or the thinner necks??

I can tell you my experience: I had a late 1980's that had a pretty thin neck, comparable to a Jazz Bass; then I had a 2000's bass that had a much thicker neck, still very playable and nowhere near a baseball-bat P-Bass. So my guess is that the neck profile has changed a few times throughout history.

OK. Looks like he took down the auction already. Wonder if he sold it?

Agent, If you look carefully you can see that the neck PU is a Hi Gain. And i'm not 100% sure but it seem the adjustable pole one, so the bass could be dated from 2006 onward.

Anyway, a stunning beautiful bass.

it's a shame Ric doesn't offer more maple flamey goodness much anymore, even on their higher end insruments like the 381. I've always wondered if it was a cost control issue, but whenever I've asked them at NAMM, I don't get a straight answer.
