Interesting. I wonder if it has any type of factory dot markers on the other side, or home-made. What makes the story credible is that it does not have a pickguard or pickguard holes, which could indicate that it was indeed a one-off. :!:

Looks like a parts-bass to some degree, especially with the finish, which seems to be a varathane laquer, put on with a brush. Also looks like the strap was left on while the bass was in its case, as you can see the nylon marks in the finish. Even though the metal on this bass has been subjected to the elements, (looks like salt oxidation, and the map on his ad shows him not too far from the ocean), some TLC and some #0000 steel wool would clean up most of it. It does have a certain mojo to it, and the fretless neck looks great attached to the body. I also noticed that the body appears to be a "sandwhich". with a top and bottom piece/venneer. Would be interesting to know more about the history of this bass, and whether it was bult by an employee for example....

Never been a fan of the righty neck on a lefty bass. Always smacked to me of lame compromise. We shouldn't have to compromise. "Vintage" aside.

I think this is just a righty bass that someone made a lefty body for a swapped the parts over to. I don't think this is a custom job from musicman.

I believe it's a parts bass, with real lefty MM body that was never finished or assembled at Leo's factory. Leo and Musicman had a falling out in 1980; MM wanted to buy Leo's factory, and Leo refused to sell it, as he considered selling Fender to be a big mistake. Leo reportedly made some basses with faulty trussrods, and MM quit giving him any orders, which left Leo with a lot of MM parts and machinery lying around his factory. Leo set up to build his own stuff under the G&L name, and MM went under a few years later, when Ernie Ball bought it. A lot of the parts were made into instruments by Grover Jackson (IIRC) who later made Jackson and Charvel (IIRC), but there were a lot of parts sold at auction, and this bass is almost certainly one that was bought as parts to an individual bidder. Notice the seller dates the bass by the pot codes, and not by the serial number, that originally was on the neckplate, but was put on the bridge around '79. My guess is the guy got a pre-serial bridge and a post-serial neckplate. Anyway, that's my bet. Oh, and that pickup route is exactly like my old Stingray's was; a handmade body probably would be in the shape of the pickup.
