Agreed, the reversed headstock kills it.

As a 60s garage rock fanatic, I can't help but want to like those Yamaha SGs and their connection to the period. I was pretty thrilled when the late-90s garage revival lead to their updated reissues. But everyone I know who bought one didn't really like them and moved back to more traditional guitars - I mostly see them today as a "party piece" for live shows or videos. I found this chart of 1960s Yamaha guitar evolution online, and it's a laugh.

Just noticed how the shapes aren't too out-the-norm in 1966, but get progressively odd-looking through 1967 to 1968... could be more shipments of psychedelics coming into the design dept. by then.... ! 8-)
