Too bad it does not have the original pickups!

It's definitely a looker.

I'm wondering if it's an early 80s bass that looks like a '57 or if it's truly a "re-issue" with the proper vintage radius

Standard Precisions from the early 80's had C width necks with a flat 12" radius, a departure from both vintage and current modern specs.

A true reissue would have a vintage 7.25" radius.

**edited for clarity**

I'm guessing it's not a true reissue.

The tuners and the micro-tilt are a dead giveaway.

It's an '83 Standard with a replacement pickguard, replacement pickups, and added covers.

I might be wrong but there was some lefty P Bass '57 reissues made in the mid 90's. I remember then, Fender was making a catalog and I recall looking at this '57 drooling. Not so sure about a '57 reissue made in early eighties.

AFAIK The early 80s American Reissues production should have the serial number starting with V (as for Vintage).

As Dano said, it's a regular P-Bass with a changed pickguard and added covers. Fender did make reissues in the early '80s, but no lefties. There's never been a reissue lefty bass, other than the MIJs and CIJs. On guitars, though, yes, they did reissue vintage American Strat and Teles.

That sounds right....also, it was stamped on the neckplate, not a decal on the headstock.
