If the neck doesnt have an overly recessed truss rod or any weird warps, then you are correct sir 8-)

The dude is not responding to several emails on this bass. Has anyone but Frenchy-Lefty been contacted? He's close to me. I just want to see the bass.

Exactly. I love the vibe and sound of '70s P-Basses, but I tried my luck on eBay two times, and they both had bad necks. And I played a bunch of '70s P-Basses at Chicago Music Exchange once, and man, they all seemed to have less-than-straight necks (don't know if for lack of a setup, or bad necks).

But definitely worth checking one out if within driving range.

He did not return my 2nd E-mail either. My guess: someone snatched it FAST - bbl, did you get it? Hopefully someone from the board who will tell us everything this awesome looking bass. Suspens...

Actually, Gravebass, this little stinker, raced me to the seller, and is on his way there as I am writing and will probably snatch it for himself. I just called the seller in order to check it out today, a little embarrassed, the guy told me: "someone is coming in a few hours to buy it". Me "I bet his name is Jim" the guy was surprised "how did you know?"

Congratulations Jim! I would have loved owning this bass but you are saving me a lot of trouble with my wife. The bass stays within the board!
Let me try it though.

Well, you were partially correct. 8-) I wasn't racing to him but I got an email from him early this morning and he said it was available. I took an early lunch to meet in SF. I sold my Spector so I had money to burn.

Neck is straight, no twist, no issues I can see so far with the neck but the frets are a little worn. Expected from that old of a bass. I need to check the truss rod tension and hope it still turns. Its definitely got its fair share of mojo. You cant see in the pics on craigslist. All the metal parts except for the ashtray have rust. The screws down to the rust. Pots are scratchy but even with many year old strings, it sounded pretty good in his place. I wont know more until I get it home tonight and tear it apart this weekend to check all the dates. He is the original owner and gave his word all was original. It looks it. I do not plan to refurb it or resale it. I like it just how it is with the missing chrome plated hardware. I'll post some pics later when I get it restored. Case is a POS with broken handle but old Fender logo on the side. Never saw a plastic Fender bass case before. The bass has a good story and great to know the history. He wanted it to go to a player, not a reseller. He got his wish.

Oh, and the finish on the neck around the fingerboard glue-to-neck is wearing and wood is a little exposed. This occurs with player sweat and many years of playing. I didn't care, I liked the mojo vibe of it. The owner gigged the hell out of it.

Here she is restored. I was luckily able to locate a lefty case from a Custom Shop 1964 Fender Lefty VI. The case fit my P bass perfectly....

The shots from my phone but still worth posting. The only thing that is not original is the pup ashtray and knobs. I have the original knobs stored. It was well worth the restore and a great player.

Very pretty. But why is the pic titled 'Fender Jazz 1978 Bass Lefty'? ;)
Interesting case too, the position of the handle is odd in comparison to the side of the case where the body is. But a beauty indeed, at an incredible price.

Jeroen, you detail oriented dude. ;) Cant get anything past you lefty folks, ha!!

The pic was titled incorrectly. Good catch. The case is a true lefty custom shop but the handle was installed on the side that a righty case should be. The seller noted it and got another case and sold this one in an auction. I didn't really care and thought it was kinda cool to be made with a defect. It's already lefty (defective)... :D It does not body dive like I expected since the handle is incorrect but I also didn't buy it to carry around, only storage. Perfectly fitted storage case and doesn't have that teddy bear fur like the new Fender cases.

Sweet restoration job!

It astounds me that there are so many 78 lefty P basses in natural out there in the wild - 76's too, not so much 77's tho. Anyone have a clue why that is?
