I think Volk is right-handed.

I like basses that have seen some miles, but that's not a lot of bass for $3k, regardless of vintage or provenance.

I agree. Any value would be in proof of the provenance. I just found the story interesting. You're correct Volk played right handed and this is set up as a right handed player and the Fang on the back is correct when flipped as Volk would do during performances. It became a trade mark of sorts. As always this type of valuation is very subjective. As the old saying goes " It's worth whatever someone is willing to pay"

Here's more info on Volk. I found it interesting. If you scroll down it talks about his trade mark name in tape on the back of his basses.

I can't see that it was ever actually played righty. There are no good pictures of the lower horn, but the upper horn shows a lot of strap wear. The reversed strings don't really tell you much. Nor does the tape, which could have been applied by a fan. In fact, it looks to spell "fan." Whatever shading suggests a "G" is different from the tape markings.

It's a shame, because anyone who played a bass that much is worth knowing in my book, but I can't see how it was Volk.

I love this. But a bit rich for my blood, especially with no real evidence of the history as stated

I just spent about 15 minutes looking on youtube for any evidence that Volk played this bass... I couldn't fine One instance of him using this bass in any Raiders videos, or in the bands he played in after that... the provenance is questionable at this point....

Yep. Without solid proof the price is way too high for a 77 in that condition. It's listed on reverb too.

I never heard of Fang before this because:

I listened to Paul Revere and the no name band except for the singer whose name I've also forgotten. "Paul" was one of the musicians you wouldn't have paid attention to had he not worn his Am Revolution suit and looked like a twat. The singer was good, but their music really stank. They were sort of the NIckleback of their day. No one cared who the band was. They could have changed members everyday and people wouldn't have known any less about them.

Fang might have been the best bassist in the world, but he's a footnote to another footnote.

So hell, I'd pay him $500, break it down, and sell its parts. I'd sandblast "fang" off the back first.

Damn I hope Fang is not one of your uncles.

This is in the description. This bass was apparently owned by an avid Phil Volk fan or by a musician in a Raiders' tribute band. It's not even claiming to be Volk's.

Damn, and I would have paid $500 if it had been THE Fang's. What a ripoff.

Now I'd expect to be paid $500.

In fact I might sue the owner for inflicting that ugly instrument on my psyche. 1st Fang and then FAKE Fang--I mean, next tell me Santa Clause is just Mrs Claus in drag, that Coca Cola is RC in a different can, that Larry Flint wrote Billy Graham's autobiography, that Reverend guitars are illegal immigrants, that my mother was my father and my father my first cousin. I don't know what this world means anymore!
