Interesting description.. not sure about “left handed pickups” as these look like regular barts to me. Maybe the preamp is on a board that’s “handed?” Also wondering about “every two years” build cycle...

Quick follow up - why are the barts so huge? You could make it a six string

I am going to bid on this. This is a situation for me where I can finally correct my one big gear regret. I had one like this a few years ago that I sold, and I have kicked myself about it ever since. I didn't even need the money at the time. I have been subscribed to eBay and Reverb alerts for years waiting for another to come along.

Now, I can vindicate myself!

Let me know if you plan on bidding. I don't want to get into a bidding war with a forum bro. :)

Awesome, good luck!
I would love to have it too, but I can't afford it right now and with only four strings I doubt it would get the playtime it deserves. So I won't be getting in your way :)

Years ago I changed out EMG's in my custom bass (which is in my avatar) to Aero Instruments pickups. After talking at length with the owner/builder Larry Pollack, I was told his pickups were going to be wider, so the magnets/poles could pick up the entire arc of the string, and excite the magnets below... so, these pickups may be just right! :)

Yeah. My first thought was, "oh, here we go. The seller is playing that game where the original sale was just a price feeler, and they cancel the sale and relist the item as a best offer sale with a buy it now price $800 higher than the winning bid."
But it is the same price, so maybe the original buyer bailed.

That bodes well for me because he was the only other bidder.

As an owner of a lefty Zon VB-4, my impression is that the seller's comments are not technically correct, but the end result isn't terribly misleading. As far as I know, most or all VB-4's are made to order anyway, so there is no "cycle" of production that would correspond with the fact that it was left-handed. I can, however, confirm that my VB-4 took over two years to build, and that at least one part of the delay was the electronics (although my bass is also 32" scale, which supposedly caused more issues than they expected), but this was explained to me as a more general issue with Bartolini being behind rather than an issue specific to the left-handed nature. I do not know if the pickups are left-handed specifically, but the preamp and control knobs are correctly oriented for a left-handed bass.

Those pickups are not left handed. The poles are the same on both ends so no need to custom order.
The preamp is probably a Bart NTMB 918 spec'd out for Joe. He has his own specs from Bartolini.
The pots were probably lefty orientation (noble or something).
Unless it's a custom preamp. That would be a question for the seller to open the rear cavity plate and take a picture. My guess is its just the older NTMB with 2 modules.

From the seller:
"The last buyer did not realize it is a LEFT HANDED guitar and asked me to cancel the order."

:x

Well, I bought it! I would be lying if I were to say I am not a little miffed that I had to pay an extra $187 because someone "didn't realize it is left-handed." But, I shouldn't complain. I am really excited! I love jazz basses and this gives me a chance to redeem the mistake I made years ago. I can't wait to plug this thing into the B7K Ultra and jam to some Evil Empire!

EDIT: I just realized in my previous post I put an angry face at the end. I meant to put a laughing face. I must have hit the angry face by mistake.

Excellent!! Very excited for you! ..... would love a video when you have it and it’s perfectly set up..... you could keep it short and call it “Zon in 60 seconds”......

Or make it almost inaudible, while blowing into your mic, and calling it "Zon with the wind".

Thanks, guys!
I think I should retract my previous statement. I am no longer miffed about the $187 because it is probably better that I had it shipped home anyway.

So you guys are pronouncing it like, "Zahn." I have been pronouncing it "Zone" this whole time! Ha! Thanks for the correction!
