Got the T-bird yesterday. There is a back story Jimmy from Southpaw called and he said there was a problem with the finish near the bridge pickup, so he was going to ship me this bass and a paid return ticket when the next T-bird comes in I can send this bass back and get the new bass. About the bass I couldn't see an issue with the finish there was a blemishs on the d&g tuners the bass traveled in the cold the neck needed a slight adjustment the bass was tuned a step down. The bass was not as heavey as you would think, the case is another story. ( i believe Gibson is using TKL cases from Canada.) The bass plays and sounds amazing little Paul has not put it down, he said the neck is faster then his American DLX Jazz. He will be limited to using bass in house until the new one arrives.
Jimmy from southpaw guitars is amazing great to deal with and most important honest. Who do you know that woud give a stranger a bass offer to send a pre paid postage sticker and send us the next T-bird? I would highly recomend Southpaw guitar an I'm glad I put a deposit on the SG Bass with Jimmy. He will be getting Ric's so if your in the market give him a shout. I will likly be buying all new insterments from Southpaw Guitar.

Because they are not.
maybe the pickups are different on these newer models? I dont know as Ive never played an original
I would call it more punchy, ballsy or thick but not muddy at all.
clear, tight
All strings and notes are clean and even in volume all the way up the neck

The sg doesn't have the mudbucker like the old EB's. If you open the pickup (don't think you will :D ) you'll find a Tb+ pickup inside, with two ceramic bars. The screws on top are there only for the old school look. It's a great P.U. much more usefull than a mudbucker, imho.
Many players also like to turn the bridge pickup so the coils are closer to the neck, don't know if it really makes a big difference.

They are indeed big, but that's fine with me! Love the red color against that sexy white fur! All you need now is to take a pic in front of a fireplace! ;)

we will have to compare serial numbers because yours and mine were made and shipped at the same time.
so you or I could have the first faded SG, depending on how southpaw shipped out
sorry to burst your bubble

Bugsy has serial number ending in 1611. Mine ends in 1615. I wonder where the other three are? Also, I figured out why the beautiful hard shell case has such a wide headstock area... when you set the case down, the instrument is level with the ground as opposed to most cases where the neck dives towards the ground a bit. Does that make sense without a photo? Still love the bass. I put steel roundwounds on it for some extra grit. Run mostly the neck pickup only for a fat, reverberating sound.

Hmm, the serial numbers may not be consecutive. (Unless Jimmy at Southpaw got a huge pantload of them.) Mine ends in 1604.

The bass was lighter then expected, the neck dive is minimal the tuners are probably lighter, I decided to keep this bass I didn't feel the issues were that severe. The bass plays great. It's first public appearance will be 3/17/13 at the "Count Basie Theatre" in Red Bank Nj. The bass was checked out by a local luthier and he was impressed with such low action virtually no relief in the neck , added some relief and now no more issues.
